About Ophir 7's 2009
THE 2009/10 rugby season kicked off in style on Saturday afternoon (August 22) with the annual Ophir Sevens tournament.
All-Ireland League side Dungannon proved just too good for the opposition as they lifted the Will Totten Memorial Trophy for the first time.
The sun was shining at Magowan Park in Mallusk for the 35th annual seven-a-side competition, which attracted teams from Academy, Carrick, Dungannon, University of Ulster Coleraine (UUC), Ballynahinch, Holywood, Queen's, Instonians, Randalstown and the home club.
Dungannon and Queen's came out on top in their respective groups, with Instonians and UUC also producing some fine rugby to make the semi-final stage.
The Co Tyrone men cruised into the final with a 31 - 7 win over last year's champions Instonians, and it was Queen's who took victory in a hard-fought university challenge as they scored two late tries to defeat UUC 31 - 19.
Despite their good form throughout the tournament, Queen's, the 2007 winners, couldn't match the pace and power of Dungannon in the decider and finished on the wrong end of a 31 - 12 scoreline.
Meanwhile, earlier in the day in the Under 19 tournament the host club were joined by teams from Ballyclare, Larne, Randalstown, Carrick, Harlequins and Malone.
Carrick made it through to the final with a 22 - 7 win over local rivals Larne, while Malone enjoyed a comprehensive 31 - 5 victory against Randalstown.
It was the Belfast side who produced the best rugby in the final, securing the Ken Bonar Memorial Trophy with a 19 points to 7 win.
Ophir President Ced Bonar thanked all those who helped make the day such a great success, particularly Newtownabbey Borough Council, MCW Properties and the many local businesses who sponsored the event.
