Belfast’s own inclusive rugby team, the Azlans, will be taking part in the IGR (International Gay Rugby) Union Cup 2025 The tournament takes place in Oslo, Norway, from Thursday, May 29 to Sunday, June 1. It is Europe’s largest inclusive rugby competition, drawing teams from across the continent. Held every two years, it is a celebration of diversity, sportsmanship and the unifying power of rugby.
This marks a significant milestone for the Azlans as they travel with a squad of 28 players, supporters and coaching staff, their first time competing at this scale. The journey to Oslo is the culmination of a phenomenal 2024/25 season, marked by rapid team growth, commitment and strong community support.
The Azlans is proud to represent Northern Ireland and will be joining Irish inclusive teams, the Cork Hellhounds and the Emerald Warriors in Dublin to form a strong Irish contingent, showcasing the growing strength and solidarity of inclusive rugby across the island.
The team’s progress this season has been bolstered by the generous backing The Maverick, Belfast’s premier LGBTQ+ bar and entertainment venue, whose sponsorship has been instrumental in helping the team thrive both on and off the field.
“We’re incredibly proud and excited to be taking part in the Union Cup,” said Gareth Anderson, Azlans Head Coach. “A huge amount of work has gone into the growth of the Azlans, both in numbers and player development. This moment represents the sweat, training and dedication we've put in, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how the team competes in Oslo.”
The Azlans also extend heartfelt thanks to their supporters and to Ophir RFC, their home club, for their support and encouragement throughout the season.
As the countdown to Oslo begins, the Azlans carry with them not just hopes of success, but a message of inclusion, unity and pride, proving that rugby truly is a game for everyone.
