Heartbreak at UUJ on Saturday as Ophir were edged out 15–13 by Randalstown 3rds, with a late penalty proving the difference in a tightly contested game.
Ophir got on the scoreboard through a well-taken try from Ryan Knox, showing his trademark strength and determination to break the line. The game ebbed and flowed, with both sides creating chances, but neither able to pull clear.
There were standout moments in defence too – Nathan Carmichael two superb turnovers deep in our own half when pressure was mounting, while Nicky Craig steered the team around the park brilliantly, keeping us playing in the right areas. Our lineout was also strong, helping us maintain control and structure throughout the match.
With the clock ticking down and Ophir holding a narrow lead, Randalstown were awarded a penalty which they converted to snatch victory at the death.
Despite the result, there were plenty of positives. Joe Magee put in a huge shift across the park and was deservedly named Man of the Match. Meanwhile, Ryan Caughey stepped up to wear the captain’s armband and led with real grit and composure.
A tough loss to take, but a performance full of fight, togetherness, and promise for the weeks ahead.
