We speak to Azlans player Dermott about his experiences at the annual inclusive 10s tournament in Newcastle.
More than week has past from I played in my first ever rugby tournament at Hadrian's Cup in Newcastle upon Tyne. Whilst we didn’t walk away with a win, I find myself reflecting on the weekend with pride and a sense of achievement.
I was never a sporty person during school or in early adulthood, but now I find I’m wanting to challenge myself both physically and mentally; rugby felt like a good fit. On a cold night in October 2022, I turned up to training with my nerves overspilling because I didn’t know anyone and I had never played before. Those nerves were quickly forgotten when I received such a warm welcome from the team and coaches. The fact I never played before and didn’t fully understand the laws of the game, didn’t matter. I quickly got stuck in and have enjoyed learning and playing ever since.
I realise now that rugby is not just about learning and playing the sport. In addition to improving your fitness and wellbeing, it also teaches you discipline, values, respect, communication, awareness, confidence and sportsmanship. With the Azlans being an inclusive team, it has allowed me to development these skills in a safe space with like minded individuals that I now don’t just call my teammates, but also my friends.
If you’re interest in joining, regardless of your previous experience, I would say just go for it. Get in touch with the team on Facebook or Instagram for more information. I’ve not regretted it!
