Ophir Men

Ophir RFC kicked off their preseason with a testing away trip to Civil Service, finishing on the wrong side of a 31–7 scoreline but showing plenty of encouraging signs for the season ahead.

Led by captain Jordan McKinnell, Ophir approached the game with intent and spirit. The first half saw the hosts take control, using their early momentum to build a healthy lead. Ophir’s defence was put under pressure but continued to battle hard, with strong tackling ensuring Civil had to fight for every point. By halftime, the scoreboard reflected Civil’s advantage, but Ophir knew there was still more to come.

After the break, Ophir found their stride. The forwards carried with purpose and the backs began to click, producing several flowing moves. Their efforts were rewarded when Joe Magee powered over to score Ophir’s only try of the match, which was successfully converted. The real highlight was that Civil Service were kept scoreless in the entire second half, showing just how much Ophir grew into the contest.

Defensively, Ryan Caughey stood out with a tireless performance that helped shut down Civil’s attack. In attack, debutant Ryan Knox impressed in the back line, showing real composure with sharp distribution and clever passing that kept Ophir on the front foot.

Meanwhile, fellow debutant Joel Vangente produced a standout display of powerful running, relentless energy, and strong defence, earning a richly deserved Man of the Match award.

With a 24-man squad all getting valuable minutes, this preseason opener gave the coaches the chance to rotate and assess depth across the park. Despite the 31–7 defeat, Ophir left with plenty of positives: strong leadership from Jordan McKinnell, a resilient second-half shutout, a try from Joe Magee, impressive debuts, and a clear sense of progression.
