Coach’s Summary: Against All Odds What a sensational display of rugby from the Ophir U14s today! To truly appreciate the magnitude of this performance, you have to look at the context. We fielded a squad of 11 players: 5 returning U14s and 6 stepping up from the U12s (some with only months of playing experience). Compounding this was the fact that we hadn't been able to train as a squad in a month and a half, leaving the girls to literally learn each other's names during our limited warmup. Yet, facing a tough, experienced De La Mary's side, they showed incredible resilience, heart, and attacking flair in a match that practically rained tries.

Growing into the Game: From Individuals to a Cohesive Unit Understandably, at the very start of the match, we looked like 11 individuals on the pitch. De La Mary’s tested us early, crossing the try line just one minute in. However, the Ophir heads never dropped. Catherine (#4) smashed her way over the line at the 5-minute mark to level things up, and Kat (#10) grabbed her first of the day at 11 minutes.

As the first half progressed, you could see the team clicking in real-time. By half-time, the girls had evolved from playing individually into effective pods of 2, 3, and 4. A brilliant example of this growing connection came just before the 19-minute mark: a superb catch right on the edge of the try line, followed by a sweet, selfless pass to set Catherine up for her second try of the day.

Coachability and a Fluid Playing Style One of the most impressive aspects of today was how every single player listened and responded to coaching feedback. Early minor mistakes against a seasoned opposition—such as leading with the ball in contact, not competing in rucks, and not sealing the ball in the tackle—were quickly remedied. The squad completely bought into the game plan, committing to a fast, fluid, offloading style of rugby that was an absolute joy to watch.

Second Half: Hat-Tricks, Heroics, and Playing as 11 Throughout the second half, the squad's familiarity and support for one another grew exponentially. They finished the game as a true 11-player team, playing with and for each other. This transformation was only possible due to the level heads of our experienced U14 players and the sheer determination and grit of the U12s stepping up.

Kat shifted into top gear, crossing the whitewash at 12:20 and again at 20:16 to secure a magnificent hat-trick. The team kept the pressure on, adding another brilliant try to the scoresheet at the 22-minute mark. When De La Mary's managed one more score, Ophir slammed the door shut. Catherine crashed over for her own well-deserved hat-trick at 27:43.

It was only fitting that Ophir had the final word. Right on the 60th minute, Charlotte (#1) crashed over for the final try of the match to draw the second half. It was a great performance by each and every player, highlighting real potential for next season if we can replicate and build on this momentum!
